Fiji is experiencing a renewed focus on technical education, a trend with its origins in a landmark initiative that began in 1996. During a time when the allure of white-collar jobs overshadowed technical training, Montfort Technical Institute in Savusavu made a historic decision to admit female students, a significant step in shaping the country’s educational landscape.
On May 6, 1996, The Fiji Times highlighted this remarkable development at what was previously considered an all-boys institution. This change enabled school leavers in the Northern region to pursue technical courses locally, eliminating the need to travel to Viti Levu for training at the Fiji Institute of Technology.
Although the institute was not officially opened at that time, it welcomed its first 24 students, showcasing its commitment to educational inclusivity. The institution received its blessing from the late Archbishop Petero Mataca on March 9 and was guided by two Christian Brothers from Kerala, India, affiliated with the Brothers of Saint Gabriel, known for managing Montfort Boys Town in Suva.
In response to early criticism regarding the inclusion of female students, assistant principal Brother Varghese Kallely stated emphatically that the school would be known as Montfort Technical Institute precisely because of its new female enrollment. The shift was exemplified when two girls joined the school ahead of schedule, pursuing studies in cabinetmaking alongside their male peers who were focused on agricultural technology.
The students embarked on several ambitious projects, including the planting of thousands of pine, dalo, and yaqona, as well as establishing animal husbandry units. They explored innovative concepts such as fishponds, biogas production, and sustainable farming practices—visions that were remarkably progressive for their time. Brother Varghese believed that motivated youth, provided with the right skills and opportunities, could significantly transform their communities.
Fast forward nearly three decades, and this vision is more relevant than ever. The courage to adapt and modernize educational methodologies has set the foundation for a new generation of leaders equipped to instigate positive change in Fiji. The groundwork laid by Montfort Technical Institute emphasizes the critical role of inclusivity and innovation in education, highlighting the need for ongoing investment in technical fields for all students. This inspiring journey showcases not just the evolution of education in Fiji, but also the endless possibilities that lie ahead for future generations.
