Miss J. Alexander, the renowned runway coach from “America’s Next Top Model,” recently opened up about a significant health setback that remained a closely guarded secret. In the final episode of Netflix’s docuseries “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” Alexander, affectionately known as “Miss J,” shared his emotional journey following a stroke he suffered on December 27, 2022. The stroke left him paralyzed from the waist down, dramatically altering his life.

Describing his experience, Miss J recalled waking up in a hospital, unsure of his whereabouts, and grappling with the reality of his condition. “I spent five weeks in a coma, and I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t talk. I thought to myself, what was I going to do? I cried… I’m not ashamed to say that,” he said. Despite the challenging circumstances, he found solace in the visits from former colleagues Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker, who provided emotional support during this difficult time.

While the trio has maintained a close friendship over the years, Miss J noted that Tyra Banks, his fellow judge on the show, had not visited him yet, although she did express a desire to see him. The absence of Banks was highlighted during their discussions, with Manuel and Barker expressing their shock at Miss J’s condition. Barker remarked on the distressing nature of witnessing his friend in such a vulnerable state, while Manuel shared the emotional toll of the visit.

Reflecting on his past and future, Miss J expressed his longing to reclaim his role as the “queen of the runway.” “I taught models how to walk, and now I can’t walk — not yet! Not yet. I’m determined to walk,” he affirmed with a hopeful spirit, indicating his resolve to continue his journey of rehabilitation.

The docuseries not only covers Miss J’s health struggles but also delves into the dynamics between the show’s judges, including revelations about their collective exit from the series. Manuel claimed that he had considered leaving the show earlier, citing frustrations with Banks that culminated in feelings of betrayal. He presented his belief that their dismissals were part of a broader need for the series to revamp itself.

“Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” provides an intimate look at the lives of its beloved stars, blending themes of resilience and friendship. Miss J’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of support during tough times and the determination to overcome adversity. Currently streaming on Netflix, the docuseries offers both nostalgia for fans of the iconic series and insight into the personal journeys of its influential figures.
