A tragic incident unfolded on Christmas Day at M Health Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, Minnesota, resulting in the death of a security guard after she was brutally attacked by a patient trying to escape. Jonathan Winch, 35, faces second-degree murder charges after allegedly beating 43-year-old Andrea Merrell outside the emergency department while being held for medical evaluation.

According to prosecutors, Winch attempted to flee the hospital around 5:30 p.m. on December 25 when he violently confronted Merrell. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing attack, where Winch, shirtless, pinned the security guard to the ground and repeatedly struck her. Merrell was discovered unconscious at the scene and succumbed to her injuries two days later, with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner ruling her death resulted from traumatic head injuries due to the assault.

In a statement, M Health Fairview expressed their condolences, stating, “Andrea was a valued member of our security team, and our hearts are with her loved ones and coworkers during the incredibly difficult time.” They added their commitment to support their employees during this challenging period.

Witness accounts describe Merrell as a beloved member of the hospital staff and a reserve officer for both the White Bear Police and Fire Departments. Friends remembered her as kind-hearted and warm, noting her dedication to making everyone feel safe and welcome during her shifts. One friend said, “She was the most kind-hearted soul. Anybody she came in contact with instantly loved her because she was just that kind of person.”

After the attack, Winch tried to access Merrell’s security vehicle and even jumped onto the windshield of a responding squad car. Officers struggled to subdue him as he allegedly shouted, “I didn’t mean to hurt her.” He was eventually taken into custody after officers used a Taser, and prosecutors have called for a mental competency evaluation while he is held on a $2 million bond.

As the community mourns the loss of Andrea Merrell, there is hope that her memory will inspire others to continue her legacy of kindness and compassion, which was so apparent in her interactions with patients and staff at the hospital. Winch is scheduled to appear in court again on January 27.
