The Ministry of Health and Vatukoula Gold Mine are taking proactive measures following a serious workplace incident involving Amitesh Ram, an employee who suffered leg injuries while working underground. The incident took place on November 13, 2022, and despite receiving immediate medical care and undergoing surgery, Ram’s condition has drastically worsened, leaving him bedridden.
Initially treated at Tavua Hospital, Ram was later transferred to Lautoka Hospital for surgery. Unfortunately, he experienced severe complications post-operation, including breathing difficulties that led to a coma, from which he has not recovered. Concerns have been raised by his family regarding possible medical negligence, noting that he was responsive prior to the surgery.
The Ministry of Health is currently conducting an internal review of Ram’s medical records to address these allegations. Jyotika Chand, Executive Assistant at the Ministry, highlighted that they are treating the matter with the highest priority and according to established clinical governance standards.
The family has expressed frustration over the lack of information from the medical team at Lautoka Hospital regarding the drastic change in Ram’s health, questioning how a leg injury could lead to such severe outcomes.
In response, Vatukoula Gold Mine asserted that Ram was promptly transported to medical facilities after the accident and confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to thoroughly understand the circumstances of the incident. The mine has committed to prioritizing employee safety and providing ongoing support to Ram’s family during this challenging period.
This case underscores the critical need for effective communication and transparency in healthcare, especially following complex medical situations. As the family seeks clarity and answers, the ongoing reviews by authorities highlight the seriousness of the issue. The commitment from Vatukoula Gold Mine to support Ram’s family represents a constructive step toward addressing immediate needs following this unfortunate incident.
