Mariners general manager Justin Hollander announced on Sunday that pitcher Cijntje will focus on developing his skills as a right-handed starting pitcher during the upcoming spring training, according to Daniel Kramer from MLB.com.
Cijntje, known for his unique switch-pitching capabilities, previously experimented with a strategy in 2025 where he would start games as a right-handed pitcher on Saturdays, while making relief appearances left-handed on Wednesdays. However, this approach was ultimately scrapped due to ineffective performances in relief situations. The player then adapted by throwing left-handed in select matchups during his right-handed starts.
Despite this shift, Cijntje will still incorporate some left-handed throwing in his bullpen sessions. The organization has not completely dismissed the idea of him returning to switch-pitching in the future, but for now, his primary focus will remain on honing his skills as a right-handed starter.
The 22-year-old wrapped up the 2025 season with a solid 3.99 ERA, along with a commendable 120 strikeouts and 51 walks over 108.1 innings pitched between High-A Everett and Double-A Arkansas. As he prepares for the 2026 season, he is set to return to Arkansas and is poised to make a push for his Major League debut later in the summer. Cijntje’s ongoing development and adaptability suggest a promising future for the young pitcher in the Mariners’ organization.
