Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow following the unexpected death of his deputy, Ajit Pawar, in a plane crash on Wednesday. The two leaders had established a strong working relationship, overcoming their parties’ ideological differences. Pawar, affectionately referred to as ‘Dada’, was known for his pragmatism and ability to navigate complex political landscapes, working with allies such as the Congress and Shiv Sena.
The loss of Pawar is particularly significant for Fadnavis, who valued his partnership with the seasoned politician since 2019 when they formed a government that surprised many. Although that government lasted only 72 hours, Pawar later served as Deputy Chief Minister in the Uddhav Thackeray administration, while Fadnavis found himself in opposition. Despite this past tumult, their relationship remained cordial, with Fadnavis later suggesting that although the initial split was a misstep, he bore no ill feelings.
Pawar’s return to power in 2023, after rebelling against his uncle Sharad Pawar and fragmenting the NCP, reinforced their alliance with Fadnavis, especially as both leaders faced challenges from within their parties. An example of their effective partnership came after the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, where tensions emerged regarding leadership roles. During a pivotal press conference, Pawar’s forthright support for the BJP-led coalition helped affirm the alliance’s stability.
In the wake of Pawar’s death, Fadnavis now faces the challenge of navigating Maharashtra’s political landscape without such a strategic ally. The absence of a robust NCP leader means Fadnavis must confront Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde directly. The changing dynamics are evident, particularly in the context of local elections, where Shinde’s negotiating power is likely to increase.
Pawar’s extensive contributions to agriculture, water resources, and rural development will be missed, leaving a significant gap for Fadnavis to fill. As the political terrain shifts, Fadnavis will need to adapt to the new realities of coalition management, all while preserving the unity and strength of the Mahayuti without his trusted counterpart.
The future of Maharashtra’s governance may depend on how Fadnavis responds to these changes and whether he can foster new alliances in a post-Pawar political environment.
