LSU men’s basketball head coach Matt McMahon addressed the media on Thursday to discuss the Tigers’ impending matchup against the SMU Mustangs this Saturday at the Smoothie King Center as part of the Compete 4 Cause Classic. This event not only serves as a competitive platform for the teams but also emphasizes community impact and engagement in New Orleans, allowing student-athletes to leverage their influence to inspire youth in the area.

McMahon expressed enthusiasm for the SEC vs. ACC tilt, highlighting the unique experience for his players to compete in a professional basketball venue. “The opportunity to play in an NBA arena is great for our players,” he remarked, noting a pre-game community service initiative where the team will interact with local youth organizations, which he believes will benefit both the players and the program.

After a challenging performance against the Texas Tech Red Raiders last week, where LSU scored only 58 points and struggled with a 17% shooting rate from beyond the arc, the team will be looking to bounce back against another formidable opponent. With a record of 8-1, the Tigers will face the Mustangs, who stand at 9-1 and are ranked No. 20 in the nation for scoring. SMU has five players averaging double-digit points, presenting a significant test for LSU’s defense.

“I think they’re a legitimate top 25 team in the country,” McMahon acknowledged, reflecting the urgency his players feel to rectify their recent performance. He pointed out the importance of excellent transition defense and improving their three-point defense to match SMU’s offensive explosiveness. “Our transition defense will have to be really good,” he emphasized.

As the game approaches, McMahon is mindful that the outcome will rely heavily on which team can execute offensively. His team is approaching this next game with a sense of heightened motivation after their recent setback. “You only get to put that jersey on, guaranteed 32 times a year,” he reminded, underscoring the significance of each game.

The LSU Tigers will take on the SMU Mustangs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT in a highly anticipated matchup that promises not only competitive basketball but also a positive impact on the New Orleans community.
