Long-distance relationships often present challenges, especially when spanning years, and the romance between Olympic luge athletes Emily Sweeney of the U.S. and Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller is no exception. After dating for approximately 15 years, a journey filled with its ups and downs, the couple tied the knot last year, marking a joyful chapter in their long-distance relationship.

As they prepare for the upcoming Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where they will compete for their respective countries, both athletes are looking forward to their fourth and third Olympics, respectively. Dominik, the current men’s singles bronze medalist, expressed enthusiasm about the unique atmosphere of this year’s Games. He noted that the experience will feel more like a family gathering, allowing them to soak in the ambiance rather than solely focusing on competition.

The couple’s Olympic journey has been accompanied by challenges, such as Emily’s serious injuries from a 2018 crash in Pyeongchang, but they have proven resilient. They continue to support each other, with Dominik admitting he feels more anxious watching Emily compete than when he races himself.

Their relationship mirrors that of other athlete couples participating in these Olympics, such as U.S. alpine skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, engaged to Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, and American figure skaters Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who married in 2024.

Emily and Dominik’s relationship has flourished despite the demands of their sport. They managed to navigate Italy’s complex wedding regulations, tying the knot in just nine days after receiving approval last spring. They’ve established a home in Italy, rebuilding Dominik’s childhood home, and are contemplating their future together as they near the end of their competitive careers.

As they prepare for the Olympics, their bond is stronger than ever, and whether they stand on the podium or not, they will continue to affirm their commitment to each other with the question, “Are we worth it?” The answer remains a resounding yes. “We’re here. We’re happy,” Dominik said. “And we’re having a good life.” This heartfelt sentiment encapsulates their journey, illuminating that love and determination can thrive, even amidst the demanding world of competitive sports.
