Lexington, Kentucky is gearing up for its annual statewide tornado drill as part of Kentucky’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. Lexington Emergency Management has announced that the drill will take place on Wednesday, March 4, at 10:07 a.m. This initiative aims to promote preparedness among residents for various weather-related hazards.
During the drill, Lexington Emergency Management plans to test the city’s tornado warning sirens, which will sound for approximately two minutes. Officials have advised residents not to call 911 during this testing period to ensure emergency lines remain available for those in need.
Additionally, those signed up for the LexAlerts notification system will receive a test message beginning with “this is a test.” The statewide drill will also activate the Emergency Alert System, notifying residents through NOAA Weather Radio as well as local television and radio stations. However, it is important to note that the drill will not trigger a Wireless Emergency Alert on mobile devices.
Lexington Emergency Management encourages all Kentuckians to take the opportunity to practice tornado safety throughout the drill. They also stated that the event could be canceled or rescheduled if severe weather is anticipated on that day. This proactive approach not only helps residents stay informed but also strengthens the community’s overall readiness for severe weather events.
