The long-awaited Lautoka Swimming Pool project is nearing its final stages, with tenders for the last phase of construction having closed earlier this month. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced this development during the opening ceremony of the revamped Lautoka bus terminal.

Minister Nalumisa revealed that the tender for the swimming pool closed on January 13 of this year. He assured the community that the Lautoka City Council is dedicated to completing the pool and plans to have it operational by the end of the year. This announcement coincided with a series of other important updates regarding municipal projects, including the recent inauguration of the new bus terminal and improvements to local market facilities.

Acknowledging the delays, Mr. Nalumisa expressed gratitude to Lautoka residents for their patience as the project progresses. Originally initiated in 2017 with the vision of creating an Olympic-standard facility, the swimming pool project faced significant setbacks in 2019, largely due to mismanagement and complications arising from the initial contracts. The anticipated cost of the project ballooned from $2 million to approximately $12.6 million, raising public concern and criticism.

In light of these challenges, the project has undergone a re-scoping process, with new contractors now on board to ensure a successful completion. The renewed focus on the Lautoka Swimming Pool reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing its recreational facilities for residents, providing hope for improved community health and well-being through sports and physical activity.
