After 42 years, Lautoka’s main bus terminal has finally received its first major upgrade. The long-awaited redevelopment, which officially concluded today, has brought an end to several months of closure dedicated to extensive renovations aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and commuter convenience.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa described the project as a historic milestone for Fiji’s second-largest city. “It has taken the council 42 years to upgrade this bus station. The old bus station has been replaced with new pavement, and we have also installed 16 new CCTV cameras. The market and unloading bay have been resealed,” he noted.
The modernized terminal is expected to provide a safer and more efficient transport hub for thousands of daily users, particularly benefiting students and working families. The project, which cost nearly $2.8 million, was fully funded by ratepayers without any external borrowing.
Lautoka City Council Chair Tevita Rasoki highlighted the urgent need for improvement, mentioning the terminal’s previous state. “Throughout the years, the bus stand surface showed signs of deterioration, worsening as time went by. Numerous potholes were an eyesore, some as large as a lovo pit, as we all are aware of,” he stated.
Rasoki emphasized that residents deserve a modern, high-standard bus station that is safe, efficient, and user-friendly. He also pointed out that this timely milestone offers a chance to give back to the people of Lautoka, particularly to school children returning to class.
Students will return to school tomorrow to find a fully upgraded terminal, which is anticipated to alleviate congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance commuter safety. This development is being celebrated as a significant investment in public transport and urban infrastructure, directly addressing the growing needs of the city. The improvements reflect a commitment to better public services and contribute positively to the community’s overall well-being and accessibility.
