Lau Province has firmly asserted its stance against drug trafficking, declaring that individuals involved in the illicit trade “have no place” within the region. This resolute position was articulated during a gathering in Suva last Friday, where leaders from the province underscored their unwavering commitment to support law enforcement initiatives alongside the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. The leaders emphasized the critical need to combat substance abuse to protect families and ensure a safe future for subsequent generations.

Gone Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, Tui Lau, Ratu Tevita Lutunauga Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara, highlighted the well-being of the community as a paramount concern. He advocated for a strict zero tolerance policy towards drug suppliers, embodying a shared resolve among the province’s leadership to eradicate narcotics. Ratu Tevita articulated that the fight against drugs extends beyond simple law enforcement; it is fundamentally about safeguarding families and securing the future of the community.

In his address, he reached out to individuals grappling with substance abuse, encouraging them to seek rehabilitation and redemption. He noted that drug-related issues are deeply intertwined with broader social challenges, including violence against women. Ratu Tevita cautioned that communities are facing heavy burdens due to these interconnected crises and urged a coordinated approach to effectively tackle them.

His appeal resonated with leaders from other provinces, calling for a united front in the war against drugs and related crimes that threaten community safety. Lau Provincial Council chairman Meli Saubulinayau reiterated the necessity for swift and decisive action, stating that their commitment is not merely verbose but a rallying cry for community engagement in this vital fight.

Saubulinayau also underscored the importance of community collaboration, intelligence sharing, and raising awareness as pivotal elements in bolstering police efforts and deterring youth from falling into drug use. With unity and a collective spirit, Lau Province is poised to confront these challenges head-on, striving for a brighter and healthier future for all its residents.
