If you’re planning a getaway to Lake Tahoe for the long holiday weekend, now is the best time to hit the road before a series of storms sweep in. According to ABC7 Meteorologist Drew Tuma, the next few days are expected to be calm, presenting ideal travel conditions for those looking to enjoy some winter sports.
Ski resorts in the Tahoe area are anticipated to receive significant snowfall, with forecasts predicting between 3 to 7 feet. This promising snow cover is perfect for skiers and snowboarders alike.
However, if you’re considering returning to the Bay Area on Monday, it’s crucial to travel early; heavy snow is expected to arrive late afternoon into the evening, potentially making travel hazardous. From Tuesday through Thursday, conditions may worsen considerably, with forecasts suggesting up to 49 inches of snow affecting the region.
Caltrans has advised travelers to avoid alternative GPS routes designed to bypass traffic, as these routes may become treacherous quickly once snowfall begins. Jeremy Linder, a public information officer for Caltrans, emphasized that while highway crews will be busy ensuring clear roads, secondary routes may not receive the same level of attention.
Travelers should also take precautions by packing essential emergency supplies like snacks, water, flashlights, and blankets, as well as ensuring their vehicles are ready for winter conditions. This includes maintaining proper tire inflation and being equipped with four-wheel drive or chains.

Enjoy your trip to Tahoe, and make the most of the beautiful winter weather!
