Shoppers in Labasa are grappling with rising vegetable prices as Christmas approaches, with limited supplies making their way to the market. Despite the increase in costs, residents are still purchasing fresh produce, understanding that this season is crucial for consumers and farmers alike.

The President of the Labasa Vendors Association, Waisea Makulau, acknowledged that the price surge was expected due to months of low availability and the heightened demand during the festive period. He highlighted that prices have risen significantly, with cabbage now costing $7 per bundle and tubua priced at $4 per bundle. “That is the reality, but people are still buying because we all need these for Christmas,” he remarked.

A key factor contributing to the rising prices is the ongoing limitation in supply, a trend that has persisted since earlier this year as demand has outpaced availability.

Iliesa Tulaba, a farmer from Waisali, noted that the Christmas season is one of the busiest for those in agriculture, as many farmers choose to sell their produce directly at the market. “For us farmers, this is an annual event to come and sell at the Labasa Market. We know people need root crops and vegetables, so it’s about bringing fresh produce straight from the farm,” he stated.

On a brighter note, root crops remain plentiful at the Labasa Market, with some farmers traveling from as far away as Savusavu to enhance the festive offerings. Many farmers also take the chance to do their own Christmas shopping after their market activities before returning to their villages.

This uplifting community spirit reflects that, despite the challenges posed by rising prices, both residents and farmers are dedicated to ensuring a joyful celebration this holiday season. The commitment to supporting one another during this festive time underscores the strength and resilience of the Labasa community.
