Fiji Airports has clarified it does not engage directly with landowners without necessary approvals in light of recent inquiries about consultations with landowners at Labasa Airport regarding planned extensions. The airport authorities confirmed that all interactions with landowners are conducted with oversight from the relevant government bodies, namely the iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Department of Lands.
In an official statement, Fiji Airports emphasized that their engagement process is governed by strict guidelines laid out under the Director of Lands. They are committed to ensuring that these interactions are both collaborative and transparent, with representatives from the iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Department of Lands present during discussions.
This dedication to effective communication comes in response to concerns expressed by the Nabukarabe clan of Nakama Village in Labasa. The clan has sought inclusion in discussions regarding further developments at the airport, which is located on their ancestral land, feeling sidelined from consultations involving the government, Fiji Airports, and the iTaukei Lands Trust Board related to the extension plans.
Despite these claims, Fiji Airports noted that constructive meetings with landowners have taken place and reaffirmed their commitment to open dialogue. This ensures landowners remain informed and actively engaged as the project progresses.
The extension project for Labasa Airport, estimated at $8.57 million, aims to improve the existing runway and replace the aging Adi Laisa Terminal, originally built in 1973. The new terminal is planned to be a single-story facility of approximately 1,000 square meters equipped with modern amenities, including a baggage carousel and air conditioning. Construction on the runway enhancements is scheduled to occur from February 16 to March 27, necessitating a temporary closure of the airport.
This infrastructure upgrade not only promises to improve the operational capabilities of Labasa Airport but also seeks to promote a more inclusive atmosphere for local landowners as development continues.
