ATLANTA — Jonathan Kuminga made an impressive debut for the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night, marking a striking turnaround from his tenure with the Golden State Warriors. Scoring a season-high 27 points, Kuminga led the Hawks to a commanding 119-98 victory over the Washington Wizards, demonstrating his versatility with powerful dunks and accurate three-point shooting.

Having faced challenges in Golden State, where he fell out of favor with coach Steve Kerr, Kuminga embraced the opportunity to show his skills in Atlanta. “It was great,” he said after the game, also contributing seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. “I was excited to be out there with the guys.”

The Hawks acquired Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield in a deal that involved sending center Kristaps Porzingis to the Warriors during the trade deadline. Kuminga, who had been sidelined for six games due to a knee injury before joining Atlanta, wasted no time making an impact. Checkin in off the bench, he quickly showcased his talent, with a fast-break dunk and a three-pointer, illustrating the potential the Hawks saw in him.

Head coach Quin Snyder praised Kuminga’s ability to connect with his teammates, especially after Jalen Johnson, the Hawks’ All-Star forward, suffered a hip flexor injury early in the game and was unable to return. Kuminga stepped into a more significant role, playing nearly 24.5 minutes.

Kuminga, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 draft, had expressed frustration over diminishing playing time with the Warriors, where he participated in just seven of the last 38 games. Though he started the season strong, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, he was ultimately dropped from the rotation.

Despite his previous hardships, Kuminga emphasized that he wasn’t aiming to send a message to his former team. “Everybody has an opinion,” he remarked. “I really don’t pay attention to what anyone else is saying. We’re trying to win as many games as we can here. That’s my main focus.”

With a fresh start in Atlanta, Kuminga’s performance is a reminder of the potential he possesses, and Hawks fans have much reason to hope for what lies ahead in the season.
