The Fiji Airways men’s sevens team is set to welcome more fresh talent from the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, following a keen observation by head coach Osea Kolinisau. Last week, Kolinisau identified potential players during the competition in Sigatoka and believes these athletes deserve a chance to showcase their skills as the team prepares for the upcoming Singapore 7s at the end of the month.
“There are a few more boys from the Coral Coast that we would like to bring into camp and into the system, and I think it is deserving of them to join,” Kolinisau stated after a training session at Albert Park in Suva on Tuesday. “The door is always open,” he added, highlighting his commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
The new recruits are likely to come from the Yaro Chiefs, who recently celebrated their championship victory at the Coral Coast 7s. Kolinisau noted the impressive display of skills and competitiveness at the tournament, particularly from teams like the Ravuka Sharks and the Yaro Chiefs, reinforcing his belief in the potential of these players.
In Suva, Kolinisau observed many raw talents and was encouraged by their determination to earn a spot on the squad. Players currently training include Police Blue and former Devo Babas standout Akuila Dranivotua, alongside 2024 Paris Olympian Waisake Tewa. “When we come back, everybody is showing that they want to fight for a spot, and you want to see if they have what it takes to represent Fiji,” Kolinisau remarked, indicating a healthy competitive spirit within the team.
This infusion of new talent is promising for the Fiji men’s sevens team, as they look to build a strong roster ahead of significant international competitions. With ongoing enthusiasm and dedication from the new players, the future looks bright for the squad as they prepare to represent Fiji on the global stage.
