HOUSTON – Alejandro Kirk is poised to realize a lifelong ambition as he steps onto the field for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, having previously missed the opportunity three years ago due to a personal commitment. The 27-year-old catcher, who recently shone in the postseason with the Toronto Blue Jays, expresses his excitement about participating in the tournament, especially after feeling a strong longing to represent his country since childhood. Kirk, who grew up in Tijuana, couldn’t compete in the last Classic and is eager to share the clubhouse with teammates from various organizations this time around.
Kirk boasts a remarkable record, being the most accomplished Mexican catcher in Major League Baseball history with 24 career postseason hits, the highest for any native of Mexico. His impressive performance in the 2026 World Series against the Dodgers, where he recorded a .308 batting average with two home runs and six RBIs, is a testament to his skills.
This year’s World Baseball Classic marks a historic moment for Team Mexico, as six MLB All-Stars adorn the roster, including Kirk, outfielders Randy Arozarena and Jarren Duran, first baseman Jonathan Aranda, pitcher Taijuan Walker, and closer Andres Muñoz. Duran and Aranda have significantly progressed, with both earning All-Star honors since the last tournament, reflecting their growth as key players on the international stage.
Team Mexico’s manager, Benjamin Gil, emphasized Kirk’s prominence on the team, noting the evolution of the roster since the last WBC. Kirk, standing at 5-foot-8 and weighing 245 pounds, has not only made his mark as an All-Star and Silver Slugger but also as a leader on the field. His ability to guide a pitching staff is notable, as highlighted by teammate Alek Thomas, who articulated Kirk’s role as a hardworking individual who represents Mexico with pride.
As the tournament approaches, there is a sense of optimism around Kirk and Team Mexico. They aim to showcase their skills and make their country proud on one of the biggest stages in international baseball. The camaraderie and shared purpose among the players are sure to elevate their performance as they go for victory in the Classic.
