Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State University have reached an amended contract that will keep the coach in Tempe, fending off interest from other programs including Michigan. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the new deal will average over $7 million per year, with a staff salary pool nearing $11 million—ranking among the highest in the Big 12.

This contract amendment comes on the heels of Dillingham’s decision to stay at ASU rather than explore opportunities with SEC schools such as Florida and LSU. Following the unexpected firing of Michigan’s coach Sherrone Moore, Dillingham emerged as a strong candidate for that position alongside other notable figures like Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer. Throughout the negotiating process, Dillingham expressed his dedication to ASU’s football program, emphasizing the need for greater resources to remain competitive in the shifting landscape influenced by NIL and the House settlement.

ASU Athletic Director Graham Rossini hinted at the nearing agreement earlier this week, stating on Arizona Sports that discussions were progressing positively. He emphasized the importance of solidifying the necessary resources for the program’s growth, acknowledging the fanbase’s active support and its contributions to the community at large.

Under Dillingham’s leadership, the Sun Devils currently boast a record of 22 wins and 16 losses, with a notable 19-7 performance in the last two seasons that included clinching a Big 12 title and making a College Football Playoff appearance. As a proud ASU alumnus with a solid background in coaching, Dillingham’s journey began as an offensive assistant for the Sun Devils before moving on to positions at Memphis, Auburn, Florida State, and Oregon.

Referring to challenges he faced early in his tenure—including a self-imposed bowl ban from NCAA violations under previous coaching staff—Dillingham has managed to lead a competitive Sun Devils team, even amid significant injuries. The emergence of players like Cam Skattebo and quarterback Sam Leavitt, who earned the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, showcases the potential for growth within the program.

ASU’s resilience is apparent as it prepares for the upcoming Sun Bowl against Duke on December 31 in El Paso, Texas, signaling a hopeful future under Dillingham’s guidance. His dedication, coupled with the commitment of ASU’s administration and fanbase, speaks volumes about the program’s trajectory in the coming years.
