The Ministry of Fisheries has launched an investigation into a significant fish die-off in Kadavu, following reports and photographic documentation of deceased reef fish found across multiple villages along the Nasegai and Nabukelevu-i-Ra coastlines. This disturbing event took place during the first week of February.

Dr. Victor Bonito from Reef Explorer Fiji, who resides in Votua, Tikina Korolevu-i-wai in the province of Nadroga-Navosa, has indicated that similar mass fish kills have been recorded in marine protected areas along the Coral Coast. He also highlighted that severe coral bleaching is currently affecting the region’s shallow reefs, which may be contributing to these unfortunate incidents.

In light of these developments, the Ministry is encouraging coastal communities to report any new cases of dead fish. Furthermore, for public health and safety, authorities are advising against the consumption, sale, or feeding of deceased fish to animals.

This investigation underscores the importance of monitoring marine ecosystems and addressing the threats they face, reinforcing the need for community vigilance in protecting their surrounding waters.
