The Denver Nuggets face a challenging period as they await the return of their star player, Nikola Jokic. The reigning MVP went through a regular pregame routine before the Nuggets’ matchup with the Detroit Pistons, showcasing his skills with a dunk during warmups. However, he remained in street clothes when the game commenced, with plans for a reevaluation set for approximately one week from now, according to reports.

Nuggets coach David Adelman provided an update, indicating that while Jokic is progressing positively, both his physical and mental states need to be ready for a comeback. “He’s heading in the right direction. He’s been on the court,” Adelman noted. “I think it’s not just the injury; I think it’s the mental part, too, getting yourself ready to come back after going through that a month ago.”

Jokic has been sidelined since suffering a bone bruise in his left knee on December 29. The team had planned for him to be assessed four weeks post-injury, coinciding with Tuesday’s date, marking the passage of this evaluation timeline. During warmups, Jokic was seen wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg. Despite his absence, the Nuggets managed a commendable 9-5 record, securing the third position in the Western Conference standings.

Adelman emphasized the importance of allowing Jokic to return only when he is fully prepared, stating, “We’ll do the best we can to make sure that when he comes back, it’s for the right reason. It’s not like we’re holding off because we won some games. Believe me, that’s not what we’re doing here.”

Should Jokic be unable to participate in the remaining homestand—culminating in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday—he would forfeit his chances for MVP and All-NBA honors for this season. Fans and teammates alike remain hopeful for his swift and safe return, understanding the significance of his presence on the court for the team’s success.
