Japan is set to enhance its partnerships with Pacific Island countries following the recent 10th Pacific Leaders Meeting, as stated by Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Shimada Tomoaki. During a courtesy visit on Tuesday by Rhonda Tiakia Tomailuga, a member of the Niue Legislative Assembly, Shimada emphasized his commitment to ongoing collaboration and development between Japan and the Pacific nations.

Shimada expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing exchanges between Japan and Niue, highlighting the significance of the continuous bilateral people-to-people interactions. This year marks the 10th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscoring the importance of their evolving relationship.

Looking ahead, Shimada mentioned Japan’s intention to build on the outcomes from the recent Pacific Leaders Meeting, which took place in July 2024. He assured that Japan would undertake concrete initiatives while taking into account the unique needs of each Pacific Island nation, reinforcing their commitment to advancing common goals.

In his remarks, Shimada also pointed out Japan’s support for the Pacific Resilience Facility established by the Pacific Islands Forum. He reiterated Japan’s determination to tackle critical issues such as climate change, which is viewed by many Pacific Island countries as a paramount existential threat, alongside the preservation of the marine environment.

In gratitude, Rhonda Tomailuga conveyed her appreciation to the Japanese government and its people for their enduring cooperation, reflecting a bond that holds promise for future development and mutual support in addressing shared challenges.
