Iva Jovic aims to build on her promising start to the 2026 WTA Circuit after an impressive first-round victory over Katie Volynets at the Australian Open, winning 6-2, 6-3. The match showcased Jovic’s ability to maintain control, effectively neutralizing her opponent’s threats and concluding the match in just under 90 minutes. This win marks her progression to the second round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year.

Reflecting on her performance, Jovic acknowledged the challenges presented by the windy conditions. “It feels good. It was a solid match, and Katie’s a tough opponent,” she stated in her post-match press conference. “She played well and made a lot of balls. It was super windy, so there were a lot of different conditions to deal with, but obviously I’m happy to be through.”

This 18-year-old talent is already making waves, competing in her third tournament of the year. She reached the semi-finals at the ASB Classic and then lost a hard-fought final at the Hobart International. “Honestly, it all feels like one big tournament because I feel like I’ve almost been playing every day,” she said. “I like when I get to play a lot of matches and build momentum. I think I made a lot of advancements, and thankfully that’s showing up early in the season, which is nice.”

Jovic has focused on numerous improvements over the offseason, including enhancing her physical strength and refining her technical skills with tweaks to her groundstrokes and serve. “It was a lot of long days, but it’s definitely starting to click now, and hopefully, I can keep improving as the year goes on,” she remarked.

Demonstrating remarkable composure for her age, Jovic expressed surprise at how relaxed she felt before her first match, despite the hectic atmosphere. “Honestly, I was so relaxed — almost too relaxed. I woke up wanting to sleep more… it was kind of a whirlwind,” she shared. This steady demeanor likely contributed to her successful start in the tournament.

In addition to her on-court endeavors, Jovic has fostered a positive relationship with fellow player Victoria Mboko, stemming from their junior days. The two players are set to partner in doubles, highlighting the camaraderie that often forms within the sport. “It’s really nice to see her doing so well and to be here together,” Jovic said, expressing excitement about their upcoming match.

As a seeded player in a Grand Slam event, Jovic recognizes the significance of her achievement but remains focused on maintaining her competitive approach. “I think it’s really nice just to achieve the goal. You still want to play as well as you can and take it one match at a time,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Jovic faces Australian wildcard Priscilla Hon in the second round. Aware of the challenges that come with competing against a local favorite, she noted, “It’ll be quite the atmosphere,” but added confidence knowing her family would be there to support her as well.

With her impressive start and clear focus, Iva Jovic is positioned for a promising run at the Australian Open, showcasing her talents and determination to succeed on the WTA Circuit.
