Conduent has marked a significant milestone in Italy’s public transportation sector by launching the nation’s first integrated transit EMV contactless payment system. This innovative system unifies two major operators—Brescia Mobilità’s urban network and Arriva Italia’s extra-urban network—creating a seamless ticketing ecosystem that aims to streamline public transport for commuters.
This pioneering solution, which became operational on December 22, 2025, addresses the longstanding issues of fragmented payment methods prevalent across various transit operators in Italy. By allowing passengers to use contactless debit or credit cards, as well as NFC-enabled digital wallets, to purchase a single ticket valid on both networks, the system alleviates the challenges typically encountered when switching services. It computes fares automatically based on the journey undertaken, enhancing convenience and efficiency for both riders and transit authorities.
The technology behind this integration includes two advanced modules: a Tokenizer, which secures sensitive payment information by creating unique identifiers for transactions, and an Orchestrator, which oversees the payment process from initiation to settlement. These features ensure robust security and operational efficiency, transforming the integration into a sophisticated multi-operator payment hub rather than merely a connectivity project.
Conduent’s extensive operations span over 400 public transit networks globally, and their ongoing expansion in Italy includes experiences from prior implementations in cities such as Venice, Bergamo, and Verona. The combined Brescia and Arriva Italia systems exemplify Conduent’s ability to scale complex integrations across multiple operators, underscoring their potential for broader applications across Europe.
Leaders from both Brescia Mobilità and Arriva Italia have expressed enthusiasm about the system’s implications for enhancing passenger experience and setting a foundation for further geographic expansion. Jean-Charles Zaia, President of Transit Solutions at Conduent, emphasized that this initiative could serve as a proof-of-concept for larger-scale implementations, indicating a bright future for smart mobility in Italy.
