Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Lavi Rokoika, recently addressed concerns regarding the agency’s impartiality at a press conference. She firmly denied allegations that FICAC has been utilized as a means to target political figures, emphasizing that the agency operates independently and is guided by internal protocols rather than external influences.

In response to public concerns and media speculation about FICAC’s independence, Rokoika stated, “We have not been weaponised. We do not take our instructions from anyone in government or in Parliament.” She further explained that every complaint received by the commission undergoes rigorous scrutiny, involving multiple layers of legal and investigative review designed to minimize bias in decision-making.

Rokoika noted, “The decision comes to the Office of the Commissioner, but there are many people within the organisation who deal with any one particular file.” This structure is in place to ensure that no individual has the unchecked authority to make significant decisions, thereby reinforcing FICAC’s commitment to transparency and fairness.

When questioned about the legality of her appointment, Rokoika chose not to comment, as the issue is currently under judicial review. “There are lawful processes in place to deal with questions about it. It is currently before the courts, therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment,” she indicated.

In her conclusion, Rokoika assured the public that FICAC would continue to adhere to established protocols to execute its mandate transparently and independently. This dedication not only upholds the integrity of the commission but also helps to build public confidence in its role within Fiji’s governance framework, promoting a more accountable and transparent political landscape.
