AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team celebrated a significant milestone in their 2025 season on Wednesday, December 10, as they achieved a hard-fought victory against their in-state rival, Iowa, with a final score of 74-69 at Hilton Coliseum. This win not only ended a three-game losing streak against the Hawkeyes but also marked them as a true contender in the season, as they outperformed their previous schedule of less competitive opponents.

Star player Audi Crooks showcased her remarkable talent, scoring 30 points and securing 10 rebounds. Alongside her, Addy Brown contributed 20 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists, while Jada Williams added 11 points and distributed 12 assists, demonstrating the team’s depth and ability to shine under pressure. Together, they accounted for 61 of Iowa State’s 74 points, propelling the team to an undefeated record of 11-0, the best start since the 2013-14 season.

“I feel like now we’re battle tested,” Crooks stated confidently, highlighting the importance of this victory amid some earlier concerns about the team’s schedule. The triumph over Iowa was particularly momentous as it was the first time the current roster experienced a win in the historic rivalry, which last saw Iowa State triumph back in December 2021.

In a highly competitive matchup that featured five ties and 10 lead changes, the Cyclones had to navigate through a challenging game. Iowa initially controlled the first quarter, leading 23-19, thanks to a late three-pointer. However, Iowa State rebounded in the second quarter, ultimately entering halftime tied at 35-35 after a back-and-forth contest.

The third quarter proved decisive for the Cyclones, who dominated by scoring 26 points to Iowa’s 13, helping them establish a 61-48 lead by the close of the period. Crooks emphasized the significance of drawing fouls on Iowa’s key players, which allowed the Cyclones to execute their offensive strategy more effectively.

Despite Iowa making a vigorous push in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to just three points, Iowa State held on for the win. The Cyclones faced some struggles at the free-throw line, successfully making only 9 of their 20 attempts, yet managed to maintain their advantage until the final whistle.

Iowa State had to contend with the absence of backup point guard Reese Beaty, who is set to miss two weeks due to a foot injury. Beaty had been making a solid impact prior to her injury, averaging 5.9 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds in the early part of the season.

Coach Bill Fennelly reflected on the excitement generated by this monumental win, stating, “It’s no accident I have 203 text messages already.” The Cyclones celebrated the victory, with players dancing on the court and capturing memorable moments, indicating a team united in their goals for the season ahead.

Next, Iowa State will prepare to face Northern Iowa on December 14, marking the completion of their non-conference schedule. The team is optimistic that this impressive win stands as a foundation for greater achievements as they progress through the season.

“This should be something that we celebrate, enjoy,” Fennelly expressed to his team, emphasizing the hope for many more memorable moments in the future.
