Hilary Duff made a triumphant return to the stage last month in London, performing her iconic song “What Dreams Are Made Of” live for the first time in 18 years. The song, a highlight from the beloved 2003 film The Lizzie McGuire Movie, has maintained a special place in pop culture, celebrated and even memed by fans over the years. With Duff’s return, the moment felt significant, marking a notable cultural resurrection.

Though her new performance brought nostalgia, Duff is not solely reliving her past. Known for her early acting roles, including Lizzie McGuire and Agent Cody Banks, Duff has also released music that has become integral to her identity. A decade ago, she released her album Breathe In, Breathe Out, which she described as feeling “a little clunky.” However, her new album, titled Luck… or Something, embodies a fresh direction with a sound reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves and Carly Rae Jepsen. Executive produced by her husband, Matthew Koma, the album promises to showcase her artistry while honoring her roots.

After a five-year hiatus dedicated to television, including her role in the series How I Met Your Father and an aborted Lizzie McGuire reboot, Duff’s musical return feels timely. Her recent concert in London saw an enthusiastic audience, mostly made up of millennials, joining her in singing both classic hits and her new tracks. The full album is set to release on February 20, and she will embark on an arena tour later this year, an opportunity she is clearly excited about.

In an interview at a Peckham restaurant, Duff opened up about her experience performing again, describing it as a mix of confidence and uncertainty. Reflecting on the creative process for her latest album, she emphasized the personal connection she shares with Koma, noting that this record represents a more intimate collaboration. The joy of creating music alongside someone she trusts has proven to be a therapeutic and fulfilling experience.

Duff shared her aspirations, humorously stating her dream is to be “sixty with a glass of white wine on a yacht, playing cards with friends.” Despite her busy life as a mom, she finds solace in the artistic process, even taking up crocheting as a calming pastime after performing.

Touching on the Lizzie McGuire reboot that never came to fruition, Duff expressed mixed feelings. While she is disappointed that the project did not materialize, she recognizes that it may have held her back from prioritizing her music. She believes that the reboot’s potential was promising and had the right intentions but felt that the creative direction did not align with her vision for the character’s evolution.

Looking back on her career, Duff demonstrates a mature perspective, acknowledging the highs and lows she has experienced and expressing gratitude for her current place in life. She reflects that if she could relive her career, she might have chosen to say “no” more often, prioritizing her family and personal growth alongside her professional journey.

With a new album on the horizon and inspiring live performances, Hilary Duff is not just returning to the stage; she is establishing a new chapter in her multifaceted career that celebrates her past while confidently moving forward.
