Residents living on Hawaii Street in Korovuto, Nadi, are voicing their frustrations regarding the frequent damage to water pipes, which they attribute primarily to heavy vehicles traversing their area. This persistent issue has led to escalating water bills and low water pressure that impacts the daily lives of around 25 households.
Local resident Abhay Nand highlighted the ongoing struggle, noting that the pipes—which run above ground for over a kilometer to reach their homes—are frequently compromised. Damage not only stems from the heavy traffic but is also exacerbated by rubbish being burned near the pipes. The result has been disruptive water service, with Nand reporting a bill exceeding $180 due to a leak caused by a burst pipe.
The situation is made worse as leaks accumulate water on the unpaved streets of the settlement, which further deteriorates road conditions. Another resident, Susan Lata, shared that the low water pressure adds significant difficulty to everyday tasks, making it challenging for families to manage basic chores.
In response to their struggles, residents have united to submit a plea to the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), requesting either that the main water pipe be moved underground or that individual meters be installed for each household. However, they lament that the response from WAF has been insufficient, with little action taken to remedy their situation.
The community has pressed WAF for clarity on the matter, as they remain hopeful for an effective resolution that will not only enhance their water supply and pressure but also resolve the infrastructural issues related to their current water piping system. The residents aspire for a swift resolution that will improve their quality of life and ensure consistent access to this vital resource.
