Rosette Andrews Singh is a remarkable 56-year-old grandmother who, despite having only two percent kidney function, remains a vibrant presence at the Korovou market, where she has been selling grog and fresh produce for two decades. Her determination and resilience shine through as she navigates the challenges of her health condition, which she has lived with for three years.

Rosette recognizes the weight of her health issues but refuses to let them define her. “I usually go for my dialysis and then I’m back in the market,” she shared. Her commitment to her work stems from an intrinsic need to stay active and engaged rather than remaining at home. Originally from Kasavu and having moved to Korovou after marriage, Rosette’s professional journey began after attending Gospel High School. She built a successful career with Morris Hedstrom, advancing from a cashier to branch manager before deciding to focus on her family.

Her life took a significant turn three years ago when she became ill. What began as a week of unwellness escalated into severe symptoms, leading to alarming health revelations—a blood pressure reading of 245 and failing kidneys. During her hospital stay, the prospect of a kidney transplant arose, but Rosette chose to trust in her faith, stating, “If God allowed me to get this sickness, I have to accept it.”

Beginning dialysis treatment in January 2023, Rosette manages the financial burden with the assistance of her children and government support, finding strength in her family’s contribution to her care. “It’s hard — going to the hospital every day,” she admitted, yet she remains focused on her role as a vendor. Keeping her business afloat is also crucial for her family’s livelihood, as it helped fund her children’s education and will continue to do so.

With the festive season nearing, Rosette encourages everyone to prioritize their health. She emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, especially in the face of prevalent health issues like heart disease and diabetes. “If you love your family, remember to take care of your health; it’s the best gift you can give them,” she advised.

Rosette’s journey is not just one of endurance, but of hope, inspiring those around her with her unyielding faith and determination. She exemplifies the notion that true strength lies not in the absence of difficulties but in the courage to persevere despite them. Her story serves as a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can triumph.
