The NFL offseason is officially underway, and Yahoo Sports is providing insights into what lies ahead for all 32 teams, including free agency, the draft, and more.
The New York Giants are currently reflecting on a disappointing season, finishing with a record of 4-13 and missing the playoffs once again, finishing fourth in the NFC East and ranked 26th in overall DVOA. This marks the third consecutive year the Giants will be drafting in the top six, a troubling trend reflective of a roster lacking depth and competitiveness.
Following a lackluster 2-8 finish last season, head coach Brian Daboll was dismissed. Daboll’s tenure included overseeing the relatively successful development of first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart, who displayed promising rushing abilities. However, his heavy reliance on Dart’s mobility resulted in injuries, limiting the quarterback’s participation in multiple games, including preseason. Despite displaying high efficiency as a runner, Dart struggled when it came to passing, ranking 27th in plays that were not scrambles or designed runs.
Defensively, the Giants have also faced challenges. Although they have talented players like Brian Burns on the edge, issues similar to those faced on offense persisted, making the defense ineffective. Rookie Abdul Carter had difficulty converting pressures into sacks and dealt with off-field issues that affected his game time. Additionally, the Giants’ defense was one of the worst against the run, with only the Bills conceding a higher rate of explosive running plays.
Change is on the horizon as John Harbaugh steps in as the new head coach, with the aim of redirecting the team’s course. General manager Joe Schoen will remain in his role as they attempt to revamp the Giants’ strategies moving forward.
From a financial perspective, the Giants currently sit 20th in effective salary cap space, being approximately $3.3 million over the salary cap. To build a more competitive roster, restructuring contracts of players like Dexter Lawrence II, Brian Burns, and Paulson Adebo could provide much-needed cap relief. Additionally, the potential trade of defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux could free up significant cap space and offer the Giants a chance to recoup draft capital.
As they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft, the Giants have some key pending free agents to consider, including cornerback Cor’Dale Flott, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, each playing a crucial role in the team’s dynamics last season. Flott emerged as the most consistent cornerback, while Robinson had his first 1,000-yard receiving season, emphasizing the need for the Giants to fortify their offense.
Looking ahead, the Giants have multiple positional needs to address, particularly on the offensive line and secondary. The offensive line struggled significantly, with pending free agency creating potential vacancies in guard positions. Furthermore, the team’s overall defensive issues—ranked last in defensive DVOA against the run—cannot be overlooked.
With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, the Giants hold the fifth overall pick, which offers a vital opportunity to reshape the team’s future. Selecting a polished receiver like Jordyn Tyson from Arizona State could provide the support necessary for Jaxson Dart’s continued development, allowing the Giants to strengthen their roster while focusing on strategic plays and cohesive team dynamics.
As the Giants embark on this offseason, the combination of new leadership and the infusion of talent from the draft could pave the way for a resurgence, giving fans hope for a brighter future.
