Protesters convened in downtown Gainesville on the anniversary of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, voicing their dissent against the administration’s immigration policies. The rally, which occurred on Tuesday, marked the second of three planned protests targeting the immigration enforcement practices under Trump’s administration.
Organizers expressed significant concerns regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities, highlighting the tragic case of Renee Good as a pivotal example of the perceived escalation in enforcement measures. Quinnton Cooper, an organizer of the protest, emphasized that the demonstration was part of a larger movement occurring in over 100 cities nationwide, illustrating a collective response to ICE’s actions, which they claim have resulted in violence against immigrant communities.
The Gainesville rally, organized by the local chapter of the Party for Socialism & Liberation, sheds light on the growing anxiety over ICE’s operations as such enforcement has reportedly increased in North Central Florida.
In parallel to the protests, Bradford County is advancing plans for Florida’s third ICE detention center to be constructed in Starke. Following a narrow 3-2 vote by the county commissioners, the proposed facility is set to occupy a 30-acre site near a Walmart, utilizing an existing warehouse of about 100,000 square feet. Sheriff Gordon Smith expressed his view that the facility will enhance community safety through cooperation with ICE when necessary; he stated, “We’ve got enough to do to keep our community safe without targeting people.”
As negotiations between Sheriff Smith and the county manager regarding the facility’s use of county property move forward, further approval is still required from the county commissioners and subsequently by the Department of Homeland Security for the contractor.
