Moana Pasifika’s chief executive, Debbie Sorensen, has announced that the franchise has been compelled to cancel its plans to host an upcoming rugby match in Tonga due to financial constraints. Sorensen expressed that despite their best efforts to secure sponsorship, the necessary funding to hold the game in the Pacific nation could not be obtained.
This decision has left the organization saddened, recognizing that it will disappoint numerous supporters and families in Tonga who were looking forward to the event. Nevertheless, Sorensen emphasized that the club remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting rugby opportunities throughout the region.
Moreover, she pointed out a wider financial challenge, indicating that the team currently lacks the financial support needed to bring matches to Pacific Island countries. Sorensen stressed that this issue needs to be addressed for the growth of rugby in these areas.
In light of this setback, Moana Pasifika is actively engaging with Super Rugby Pacific, New Zealand Rugby, and the Chiefs to find an alternative venue for their Round Nine clash, highlighting their dedication to continuing to play and connect with fans despite the obstacles they face.
