Radike Nawalu, a distinguished figure in Fijian soccer history, is still making an impact both on and off the field as he embarks on a new chapter at Tambua Sands Resort. Officially retired from professional sports, Nawalu expresses gratitude for the opportunity to remain active in the workforce.
“First and foremost, I thank God,” Nawalu shared in a statement released by Tambua Sands. He continued to extend his appreciation to the resort’s management for allowing him to contribute to the team despite his retirement. Currently, he works in the landscapes department and also takes on the role of a resort driver.
While he still occasionally practices his soccer skills, Nawalu recognizes that the game has evolved significantly since his heyday. Resort manager Angela Bob highlighted Nawalu’s commitment and lively spirit, stating, “Radike is a fantastic worker, but what really stands out is his humour and fluency in Hindi, which brightens everyone’s day. We’re proud to have him on our team.” She also emphasized Warwick Resorts’ dedication to valuing all staff members, including retired individuals who are still able to work.
Nawalu, affectionately known as Dixie in the Fijian soccer community, remains a celebrated figure. He is regarded as one of the greatest strikers in the nation’s history, with the Fiji Football Association (FFA) acknowledging his formidable presence on the field from the mid-1980s to early 1990s. Throughout his career, he played for prominent teams, including Nadroga and Suva, and contributed to the national team, marking notable achievements such as playing in the 1992 World Cup qualifier against New Zealand.
His story exemplifies how passion, experience, and dedication can continue to leave a positive mark well beyond one’s professional athletic career. As Nawalu embraces this new role, he serves as an inspiration, showcasing that retirement can also be a time of new beginnings and continued service to the community.
