Silivinosi Tikoinadramaki Naulumatua, a dedicated civil servant from Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, is on a significant journey in Surakarta, Indonesia, thanks to the prestigious TIAS scholarship program offered by the Indonesian government. This initiative, which aims to enhance educational opportunities within the Asia-Pacific region, has provided him with the chance to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Muhammadiyah.
In a heartfelt video message shared with The Fiji Times, Silivinosi expressed immense gratitude to the Government of Indonesia, the Indonesian Embassy in Fiji, and his ministry for this exceptional opportunity. His background in the Waterways Department in Labasa has been foundational, but now he finds himself immersed in a culturally rich and diverse environment.
Arriving in Indonesia for the first time was both thrilling and daunting. Silivinosi remarked on the significant cultural differences he faced, including language barriers and unique culinary experiences. However, he has been positively impacted by the warmth and generosity of the Indonesian people. “They really take care of us,” he noted, appreciating their respectful nature despite different religious backgrounds.
The support he has received from scholarship administrators has played a crucial role in easing his transition, offering academic resources and welfare assistance. During a recent meeting with a life insurance provider, Silivinosi felt reassured about the well-being of scholarship recipients, further enhancing his confidence in this new chapter of his life.
Language, while a notable challenge, is one that Silivinosi is determined to conquer. Since November, he has actively participated in Bahasa Indonesia language classes, growing more comfortable with daily conversations. “It’s challenging, but it’s a really good experience for me,” he reflected on his progress.
Holding experience in waterways management, Silivinosi is optimistic that his civil engineering studies will significantly contribute to Fiji’s infrastructure and climate resilience efforts. He encourages fellow Fijians to consider Indonesia as an excellent study destination, sharing his joy in the experience: “I hope you will enjoy it, because I’m enjoying myself right now.”
