As the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo come to a close, fans are now looking ahead to the next installment of the Winter Games, which are set to take place in France in 2030. This will mark the first time in 38 years that the country has hosted the Winter Olympics, with the last event held in Albertville back in 1992.
The upcoming Games are scheduled for February 1 to February 17, 2030. Following the Winter Olympics, the Paralympic Winter Games will occur from March 1 to March 10, 2030. The events will be widely spread across four picturesque regions in the French Alps: Haute Savoie, Savoie, Briançon, and Nice.
In the Haute Savoie region, fans can expect thrilling events like cross-country skiing located at La Clusaz and biathlon competitions at Le Grand Bornand, including an Olympic Village to support the athletes. The Savoie area will host alpine skiing and ski jumping in Courchevel, along with Nordic combined events at both Courchevel and Méribel, and sliding sports in La Plagne. There will also be Olympic Villages set up in Bozel and La Plagne.
Transitioning to the Briançon zone, the competitions will include freestyle skiing and snowboarding at Serre Chevalier and Montgenèvre, whereas Nice will serve as a hub for ice hockey with two arenas, figure skating, and short track speed skating. The Closing Ceremony and Media Centers for the Games will also be situated in Nice.
While some details, including the potential location for speedskating events, are still unconfirmed, the excitement for the upcoming Winter Olympics is palpable. This new structure, having been in place since 1994 when the International Olympic Committee decided to separate the Summer and Winter Games, allows fans to celebrate winter sports every two years apart from their summer counterparts.
The enthusiasm surrounding the 2030 Winter Olympics provides an opportunity to showcase France’s stunning alpine landscapes and rich sporting heritage to a global audience. As fans celebrate the remarkable achievements of athletes in the current Olympics, the anticipation builds for the vibrant and culturally rich experiences that await in France.
