The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is making impressive progress in its logistical preparations for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians ahead of the inaugural Nations Championship set for July. A delegation from the FRU, including Nacanieli Cawanibuka, the general manager of the high-performance unit, CEO Koli Sewabu, and board directors Cathy Wong and Lailanie Burnes, are currently in London evaluating possible bases for the team during the championship, with confirmed venues for their home games in the UK.

FRU board chairman John Sanday highlighted that various logistical strategies are under consideration. The team is deliberating whether to create a single training camp from which they can travel to the match venues or establish separate camps in Wales, England, and Scotland before each game. “All those different options are being evaluated,” remarked Sanday, who emphasized the importance of minimizing unnecessary travel to help ensure that players remain rested and focused on their performance.

A significant consideration influencing this decision is funding. The FRU anticipates receiving a participation fee of $2 million, which is expected to cover a substantial portion of the travel and accommodation costs associated with the tournament. Sanday mentioned that negotiations are currently underway to optimize the allocation of these funds while upholding the quality of the team’s preparation.

Fiji’s campaign in the Nations Championship will commence against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on July 4, presenting an exciting opportunity for the Flying Fijians to demonstrate their skills on an international platform. The FRU’s thorough preparation approach indicates a strong commitment to the team’s readiness and competitive success, fostering optimism for their upcoming performance in the tournament.
