Tommy Fleetwood is setting his sights on challenging top golfers Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy for the world number one ranking as the DP World Tour season kicks off at the Dubai Invitational. The English golfer wrapped up 2025 on a high note, securing his first PGA Tour victory and playing a key role in Europe’s triumph at the Ryder Cup.
With the new season upon him, Fleetwood acknowledges the work ahead as he strives to close the gap on Scheffler and McIlroy, widely regarded as the top players in golf. “I would love to be in that position,” he expressed before the tournament, which begins at Dubai Creek Resort on Thursday. “There is a clear gap, those two guys are definitely the best golfers in the world. I am just one of the players in the pack behind that has some catching up to do there.”
Reflecting on his game, Fleetwood emphasizes the importance of consistent improvement, noting that even the smallest gains could make a significant difference in his performance. “I am starting the year in a different position than I have ever been, world number three. I think that is very cool and exciting,” he remarked. “The first thing to do is maintain the level that I have reached.”
Fleetwood, who clinched the Dubai Invitational title in 2024 by a narrow margin against McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence, acknowledged the challenge of going up against the best. “Challenging the top two players in the world is something I am focused on,” he said. “But it’s a long road ahead. I have to stick in, work on my game, and it’s an amazing opportunity.”
Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, is poised to compete alongside his friend Shane Lowry in the opening rounds. Lowry, reflecting on his recent Ryder Cup success, feels rejuvenated and is eager to reclaim his competitive edge this season. “For 2026, I obviously set some new goals,” Lowry shared. “I would like to contend in a couple of majors and create opportunities for wins in regular tour events.”
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Jayden Schaper is off to a promising start in 2026, having secured his first DP World Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and followed up with a win at the Mauritius Open. “It is just a huge confidence booster to know that you belong out here,” Schaper noted, expressing enthusiasm for his place among the best.
The Dubai Invitational represents a fresh start for many, offering an opportunity for golfers to establish themselves early in the season. With rising talents and established stars competing, fans can expect an exhilarating tournament ahead.
