Emerging Fijian artist Tulagi, whose passion for music ignited in his twenties, is now gaining recognition with his new track “Sevataki,” featured on the recently released album “Ga Ni Vatu” by VT1S. At 39 years old and hailing from Nabitu, Tokatoka, Tailevu, Tulagi is one of the latest talents to join the label, which showcases six artists including three newcomers.

Although his journey into music was unplanned, it was a friend’s encouragement that prompted Tulagi to explore singing. This led him to participate in the television competition “Kaila! Star Search,” which, while not an immediate success, ignited his enthusiasm for music. After relocating to Australia and taking music classes, he returned to Fiji with a renewed passion for his craft.

Tulagi’s breakthrough came in 2023 when he won the local competition “Vocal Battle.” Following this victory, he was engaged in managing a bar while performing at smaller venues. A pivotal moment arose when he saw an audition notice from VT1S and seized the opportunity, leading to his contribution of “Sevataki” to the collaborative album.

“Sevataki” tackles themes of heartbreak and emotional loss, distinguishing itself from typical slow ballads by blending emotional storytelling with upbeat rhythms that incorporate Afrobeat elements. Tulagi hopes this unique sound will resonate with listeners who have experienced similar feelings of loss.

His personal connection to the lyrics is vital. Tulagi draws inspiration from family, particularly his maternal grandfather, a talented singer he never met, along with his admiration for legendary Fijian musician George Fiji Veikoso. Working with the VT1S production team also provided Tulagi with valuable experience in a professional studio setting, helping him feel at ease during the recording process.

Now officially part of the VT1S roster, Tulagi is eager to develop as an artist and share his music with a broader audience. He encourages aspiring musicians to persevere despite setbacks, reminding them that persistence could lead someone to notice their talent. With the release of “Sevataki,” Tulagi hopes to connect with listeners who understand the emotional journey of heartbreak and the resilience it takes to move forward. This new chapter signifies not just a step in his career but also a commitment to exploring and expanding his musical identity.
