Esther Tui Tikoicolo, a remarkable 23-year-old, has emerged as a beacon of inspiration in the field of civil engineering after overcoming significant challenges related to sexism in a male-dominated industry. This month, she graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with Honours from Fiji National University and received the prestigious Engineers Fiji Prize for Female Topper, recognizing her as the highest-performing female graduate in her program.
Hailing from Juju, Rotuma, with maternal ties to Tubou in Lakeba, Lau, Esther faced numerous prejudices throughout her academic journey, but her determination and hard work propelled her toward success. “I didn’t let difficult situations define me,” she stated, emphasizing her resilience in the face of adversity.
Esther expressed her gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support, which played a crucial role in her academic achievements. “There were ups and downs along the way, but my parents encouraged and helped me through it all,” she revealed. This encouragement inspired her to undertake a six-month internship with the Ministry of Public Works, which offered her invaluable experiences and opportunities.
In a touching moment during her graduation, Esther appreciated the cheers of her family, including her grandmother, who raised her in Levuka. “Seeing my parents’ smiles, I know my hard work has finally paid off,” she said, highlighting the importance of family support in her journey.
As she looks toward her future, Esther aspires to become a registered engineer and encourages other young women to dream big. “I want to be one of those women engineers in Fiji,” she remarked, underscoring her commitment to breaking barriers and paving the way for others.
