Fiji has received notable recognition from the Commonwealth for its impactful contributions to inmate rehabilitation through the Yellow Ribbon campaign. Acting Attorney General Siromi Turaga announced that the island nation has been awarded the Commonwealth Access to Justice Innovation Award, acknowledging its effective efforts in rehabilitating and successfully reintegrating former inmates into society.

“This is a proud moment for Fiji,” Turaga remarked, expressing appreciation for the dedication shown by both current and former members of the Fiji Corrections Services, as well as past government officials who have supported this initiative. He highlighted the significance of elevating the voices of former inmates, emphasizing that these individuals can play a crucial role in positively influencing their communities based on their experiences during their time in incarceration.

“It is always essential for us to acknowledge the perspectives of those inmates. There is often a tendency to overlook them,” he added. “Recognizing their voices is not only powerful but is also a vital step forward.”

The Yellow Ribbon campaign, which was initially launched in October 2008 by Desmond Chin of the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprise, continues to serve as a symbol of hope and renewal. Each year, the campaign culminates in a Yellow Ribbon walk, celebrating the values of rehabilitation and community reintegration.

This recognition serves as a testament to Fiji’s commitment to progressive practices in criminal justice and rehabilitation, offering a hopeful model for other nations to emulate.
