At an event marking International Women’s Day at Tanoa Hotel in Suva, Fijian Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, delivered a compelling message about the necessity of women’s empowerment, emphasizing its role in strengthening families and safeguarding rights. He called for tangible actions, stating that the contributions of Fijian women should not only be acknowledged on one specific day of the year, but celebrated every day.

Minister Singh highlighted the often unnoticed yet vital roles women play in their families, from mothers who wake up early to take care of household duties to working women who juggle their jobs with childcare. “Women must be appreciated every day for all they do for the family,” he stated, underlining the significance of recognizing the hard work women put in to nurture their families.

In his speech, Singh stressed that empowerment must extend beyond mere words to ensure women’s rights to safe working conditions, equal pay, protection from harassment, maternity leave, and equitable business opportunities. To strengthen these protections, he announced that labor laws are being revised, introducing reforms focused on preventing harassment and discrimination within workplaces. He urged all employers to comply with these laws to maintain safe environments for all employees, insisting, “If you are complying, there is no reason to worry.”

Moreover, Singh pointed out the importance of helping women return from overseas labor mobility programs, emphasizing that their newly acquired skills and confidence should lead to sustainable opportunities. He advocates for support in reintegration, promoting entrepreneurship, and ensuring that women have access to training.

Australian Deputy High Commissioner Clair McNamara added her voice to the conversation, acknowledging that women serve as the backbone of families and communities. She noted that labor mobility has provided many women with the chance to acquire new skills, start businesses, support their children’s education, and uplift their entire households.

The commitment showcased towards empowering women conveys a hopeful outlook for the future, creating a society in which women’s contributions are recognized and valued. By relentlessly working towards these ideals, there is potential for a brighter future defined by the strength and resilience of women, leading to enriched families and thriving communities.
