The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has expressed strong condemnation regarding the bullying and abuse of a 16-year-old boy, highlighted in a disturbing video that has gained traction on social media. The footage shows the youth being restrained, threatened with a machete, and coerced into inhaling marijuana, which has ignited widespread outrage within the community.
Minister Sashi Kiran described the episode as a serious act of violence rather than simply a prank. She stressed that the safety and welfare of the boy and his family must be the top priority. Kiran urged adults, including parents and community leaders, to take swift action in response to such threats to children, emphasizing the importance of reporting any abuse to authorities immediately.
In her efforts to foster a supportive environment for the boy, Kiran has reached out to community leaders such as village headmen, chiefs, and church officials. She has called on them to back the family and assertively communicate that violence and bullying against children are unacceptable. Kiran further highlighted the need for enhanced community involvement and open dialogues with young people about the critical issues of bullying and substance abuse. Additionally, she advocates for greater support systems for parents and guardians in navigating these challenges.
Kiran announced the ongoing development of Fiji’s National Action Plan on Violence Against Children, reflecting a commitment to addressing this pressing issue. Plans are in place to introduce a Parenting App, which aims to equip caregivers with essential tools and knowledge to safeguard and guide their children effectively. This proactive strategy signifies a significant move towards enhancing child safety and nurturing a supportive environment for the youth of Fiji.
