The National Fire Authority (NFA) is making notable strides towards improving disaster response capabilities through the establishment of a national rescue centre, a project designed to strengthen Fiji’s preparedness for major accidents and disasters. Joel Israel, the Manager of Fire Safety and Compliance at NFA, has highlighted the importance of the organization being recognized as the primary first responder in Fiji, rather than merely a support service in the wake of incidents.

The NFA is expanding its scope of operations beyond fire emergencies to address a variety of crises and has called for a collaborative framework involving different agencies such as the Police, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, and the Fiji Corrections Service. This cooperative approach is aimed at forming a more cohesive emergency response method.

In addition to the national rescue centre, the NFA plans to establish a new headquarters, featuring a dedicated floor for this facility. Israel emphasized the organization’s focus on not just acquiring financial support but also on ensuring the government’s active role in facilitating the project’s financing. The land for this vital initiative has already been secured, marking a significant step forward.

The NFA has engaged architects and is advancing in the structural planning phase, envisioning a centralized rescue and emergency coordination centre. This development aims to reduce the burdens on existing disaster management systems and enhance both preparedness and response capabilities.
