The Basketball Fiji boys’ and girls’ teams celebrated significant achievements and invaluable experiences during the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup held in Samoa over the weekend. Interim chief of operations William Peters expressed pride in the teams’ commendable performances, as the boys’ team clinched fifth place with an 89-81 victory over the Cook Islands, while the girls’ team triumphed against Guam with a scoreline of 75-51.
Peters praised the teams for their hard work and determination, noting that they not only met their goals but also demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament, despite not advancing to the finals. “The team played their best in the competition—we did set our goals and achieved them. Although we didn’t get the win in the final, the teams showed remarkable determination,” Peters stated.
The tournament provided a vital learning opportunity for the U17 teams, marking their debut in this particular competition. Peters emphasized the experience gained would serve them well for future endeavors in the sport. “This was the first time we took a U17 team to compete, so it was a great exposure for them, and it’s all about doing better in the years to come,” he commented.
Looking ahead, Peters noted that this competition served as the final build-up for the 2025 championships and highlighted the successful year Basketball Fiji has had. “It has been a great year for Basketball Fiji; we’ve participated in numerous overseas competitions as well as secondary school competitions. We are pleased with all our results and hope for an even bigger and better 2026,” he remarked.
Additionally, Peters acknowledged the essential support from sponsors and partners, including the Fiji National Sports Commission, Vodafone Fiji, and the Fiji Sports Council, which he credited for their contributions to the success of the teams. He also expressed heartfelt thanks to the parents and families of the U17 players for their steadfast support and sacrifices, recognizing their vital role in the teams’ journeys.
This experience not only brings hope for future successes in basketball for Fiji but also fosters growth and determination among the young athletes, helping them to build resilience and expertise in the sport.
