Labour shortages, delays in investment, and issues concerning hotel capacity have emerged as major challenges hindering the growth of Fiji’s tourism sector. However, amidst these obstacles, the atmosphere remains optimistic as the 3rd Fiji Tourism Convention unfolds at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Nadi.
At the convention’s opening, Chair Jenny Seeto underscored its importance in elevating the tourism industry by addressing these critical issues and devising innovative approaches for the future. The two-day event anticipates participation from around 300 attendees, including hoteliers, tour operators, community representatives, tourism associations, development partners, academic institutions, and government officials. This collaborative environment is designed to allow stakeholders to assess the current landscape of the tourism sector and strategize new pathways for growth.
Seeto emphasized that tourism is the backbone of Fiji’s economy, a significant source of employment, and an essential aspect of national identity. “The Fiji Tourism Convention is more than just an annual gathering; it is our collective space to reflect, recalibrate, and reimagine the direction of tourism in Fiji,” she stated.
Despite the existing hurdles, Seeto pointed to the industry’s resilience, citing nearly one million visitor arrivals last year as a testament to its ability to adapt. She expressed the belief that unity among stakeholders will be vital for driving future growth.
As the convention progresses, the collective focus on tackling challenges and improving the tourism experience suggests a hopeful future for Fiji’s tourism sector. With proactive discussions and a shared commitment to enhancement, there is a strong possibility for a revitalized industry that continues to bolster the nation’s economy and preserve its cultural heritage.
