Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has announced the introduction of drug testing at future local rugby tournaments, following the successful conclusion of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroot Vatulele 7s held at Lawaqa Park. During the closing ceremony on Saturday night, Saukuru addressed players and officials, underscoring the importance of maintaining clean sport.

“We will have drug testing in local tournaments in the future. We will have officials on-site because drugs do not have a place in sports. You will represent Fiji one day,” Saukuru emphasized, encouraging athletes to stay drug-free.

The two-day tournament culminated in impressive finales, with the Police team emerging victorious in the women’s division by defeating Lilian Amazon. In the men’s division, the Fiji 7s Development team triumphed over the Ravuka Sharks with a score of 17-7.

Following the finals, Saukuru expressed his gratitude towards all participants and highlighted the supportive role of the government. “I want to acknowledge all players, officials, and management who participated in the two-day Fiji Sports Council Grassroot Vatulele 7s tournament. We thank the government for their support towards sports. Sports have put Fiji’s name out there,” he remarked.

This announcement marks a pivotal movement towards enhancing fair play and integrity in grassroots rugby competitions across Fiji, showcasing the commitment to build a cleaner, more respected sporting environment. With the introduction of drug testing, the initiative sends a strong message about the importance of sportsmanship and the values that should represent Fiji on a global stage.
