Violence against women continues to be one of Fiji’s most pressing issues, as highlighted by Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran during the International Women’s Day celebrations in Labasa. Minister Kiran pointed out that nearly two-thirds of women in Fiji experience some form of violence throughout their lives, with recent statistics indicating that about 60 percent endure various types of abuse.
During her address, she emphasized the myriad challenges faced by women seeking assistance. “Many women who seek help often encounter additional barriers,” Kiran remarked, adding that those who reach out for support frequently do not receive the justice they deserve, nor do they possess the economic means to escape abusive conditions.
In response to this critical issue, the government is actively working on the National Action Plan to Address Gender-Based Violence. This initiative aims to enhance protection and support systems for women, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies and local communities. The commitment to this plan demonstrates a proactive approach to combatting violence against women and fostering a safer environment for all.
Minister Kiran’s comments not only shed light on a crucial societal challenge but also reflect an urgent call to action for greater support and resources for women in need. With these efforts, there is hope that positive change will emerge, leading to a more equitable and secure future for women in Fiji.
