Ninety Fijian workers are preparing to depart for Australia this week as part of the government’s labor mobility scheme, which is expected to significantly boost job opportunities for local families. The cohort includes 57 first-time participants and 33 returning workers, adding to the more than 5,500 Fijians currently engaged in various sectors across Australia.
At a farewell ceremony, Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the employers, trainers, and organizers who prepared the workers, as well as to the families supporting them. He addressed the participants, stating, “Out of tens of thousands still waiting for this opportunity, you are among the 90 chosen this week. This is not just a chance — it is a door that has opened for you and your families.”
Singh highlighted the essential role of overseas employment for many households, noting that workers typically earn approximately A$1,300 per month and collectively contribute millions of dollars in remittances back home. These funds play a crucial role in covering school fees, medical expenses, housing, and supporting community development projects.
While recognizing the financial advantages that come from such employment, Singh also acknowledged the emotional difficulties workers might encounter from being away from their families. He remarked, “Behind every worker seated here today, there is a family making a silent sacrifice.”
The minister urged the participants to respect their employment contracts, adhere to workplace regulations, and avoid illegal work arrangements, emphasizing that any violations could result in immediate repatriation and jeopardize future employment opportunities. Furthermore, he pointed out that enhanced support services are available in Australia, including four country liaison officers tasked with assisting Fijian workers.
Singh concluded by reminding the workers that they represent Fiji on an international platform. He encouraged them to work diligently, live responsibly, and maintain the country’s positive reputation while abroad. This labor mobility initiative not only opens new avenues for employment but also fosters improved livelihoods and community growth back in Fiji, bringing hope and opportunity for many families.
