The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) is pressing the Fijian Government to implement prompt diplomatic actions in response to the United States’ contentious deportation policy, which they warn could jeopardize national security and economic stability in Fiji. SODELPA Leader Aseri Radrodro has voiced concerns that the new policy might result in the expulsion of hardworking Fijian caregivers from the US, who are vital in addressing the labor shortages in the healthcare sector. Additionally, there are fears that high-risk criminal offenders could be returned to Fiji without the appropriate safety and reintegration measures, creating further challenges for the nation.
Radrodro underscored the critical role Fijian caregivers play within the American healthcare system, noting that these individuals collectively send back over $500 million in remittances each year, which significantly supports Fiji’s economy. While recognizing that some individuals facing deportation are linked to serious crimes, such as drug and human trafficking, Radrodro emphasized the necessity of adequate preparation for their return.
