Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata has praised the intense competition witnessed during the opening round of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) competition. The skill level, execution, and rugby understanding exhibited by students from both the Southern and Western Zones reflect the success of the development programs established by the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL).

Since his appointment at the FNRL, Kativerata has emphasized the importance of nurturing local talent and establishing a clear pathway to donning the revered Fiji Bati jersey. His observations from the recent FSSRL matches have provided him with optimism regarding the future of rugby in Fiji.

“The young kids in Fiji are starting to understand what rugby league is all about,” Kativerata stated. He has noted significant improvements since 2023, especially in how schoolteachers have taken on coaching responsibilities within rugby league.

Kativerata was particularly impressed by the strategic acumen and focus on detail shown by teams, even at the under-15 level. “This year is much better. Even at this level, they complete their sets, understand when to kick and when to advance, and target specific zones with a clear strategy,” he remarked.

Historically, Fiji has relied on local talents groomed through the Australian system who progress to the NRL before representing the Fiji Bati. However, with ongoing development efforts and the thriving FSSRL competition, schools that were once viewed as less prominent are now revealing a wealth of aspiring athletes. Institutions such as Naitasiri High School, Ra High School, and Ba Pro Institute are actively identifying and nurturing a multitude of players eager to achieve greater success.

This trend reflects the broad effectiveness of the FNRL’s strategic initiatives. If this momentum continues, we can expect an influx of local talent ready to ascend to teams like the Kaiviti Silktails and the NRL, enhancing the Fiji Bati’s competitiveness on the international stage. The outlook for rugby league in Fiji is promising, as the next generation of players stand ready to leave their mark on the sport.
